Founded in 1874 by English immigrant Joseph E. Watts in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Watts Water Technologies began as a modest machining shop supplying textile mills. After securing his first of 18 patents for pioneering pressure relief valves, Watts laid the foundation for an industry-leading legacy in flow control and water safety. The business transitioned into a family-owned enterprise under Burchard E. Horne in 1918, eventually inventing the revolutionary Temperature and Pressure (T&P) Relief Valve in the 1930s—a innovation that defined national safety standards and boiler regulation. Over the next several decades, Watts scaled its operations globally through rapid manufacturing expansions and strategic acquisitions. The company moved primary production to Franklin, New Hampshire, in 1959 before opening international facilities across Canada, the United Kingdom, and China. After entering the backflow prevention market in the 1970s and going public on the New York Stock Exchange in 1986, Watts crossed $1 billion in sales by 2006. Strategic growth further expanded its portfolio into stainless steel drainage, commercial heating, and washroom fixtures through major acquisitions like BLÜCHER, AERCO, PVI, and Bradley Corporation. Today, Watts operates worldwide from its headquarters in North Andover, Massachusetts, driving modern water stewardship through IoT-enabled "Smart & Connected" products and lead-free manufacturing. Beyond advancing water efficiency and back-of-wall infrastructure, the company maintains a dedicated focus on environmental and social responsibility, participating in the UN Global Compact Initiative and earning WAVE Water Stewardship verification to ensure safe, sustainable water access across global markets.
