Unlike small, non-regenerable 2-litre resin cartridges, the SEV17 unit contains a substantial 28 litres of resin. It autonomously performs regenerations every 17,000 litres (at 100mg/l hardness), which significantly extends the resin's lifespan to potentially 10 years with proper maintenance. Note that a separate pre-filtration system is required to protect the softening resin from chlorine and other oxidizing agents.
