Most residential water softeners use **ion-exchange technology** to reduce hard-water minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Inside the softener’s resin tank, thousands of tiny resin beads attract these hardness minerals and replace them with sodium or potassium ions. As water passes through the resin, the calcium and magnesium are removed, producing softer water for household use. Over time, the resin becomes saturated with hardness minerals and needs to be regenerated. During this process, a salt solution from the brine tank flows through the resin, restoring its ability to remove hardness. The collected minerals are then flushed from the system and discharged through the wastewater drain.
