A twin-tank water softener operates on a continuous, alternating basis to ensure a constant supply of soft water without interruption. Utilizing a process known as ion exchange, one tank actively filters incoming hard water by trapping calcium and magnesium ions on a bed of resin beads and replacing them with sodium ions. Meanwhile, the second tank remains in standby mode. When the digital meter detects that the active tank's softening capacity is depleted based on water usage, the system automatically switches the water flow to the standby tank. The exhausted tank then undergoes a regeneration cycle—washing away the accumulated minerals with a brine solution—and steps into standby mode, ready to take over when the other tank fills up.
