The water softener system operates through a process called ion exchange to remove hardness minerals like calcium and magnesium from the residential water supply. Unconditioned hard water first enters the tall, fiberglass resin tank, where it passes through millions of tiny, negatively charged resin beads. These beads attract and trap the positively charged hardness ions while simultaneously releasing harmless sodium ions into the water, effectively softening it. Over time, as the resin beads become saturated with minerals, the digital control valve at the top automatically triggers a regeneration cycle. During this phase, a concentrated saltwater brine solution from the adjacent black brine tank flushes through the resin tank, stripping away the accumulated calcium and magnesium and washing them down the drain, which completely replenishes the system for continuous water filtration.
