A water softener works by removing minerals like calcium and magnesium that cause water hardness through a process called ion exchange. Inside the tall tanks, hard water flows through a bed of specialized resin beads that are negatively charged. These beads attract and trap the positively charged hardness minerals while simultaneously releasing sodium ions into the water.
